Travelers’ Stories: Fort Lauderdale
Sitting in Fort Lauderdale International Airport last Friday patiently waiting for our delayed plane to arrive so we could go home to Philadelphia, I struck up a conversation with 2 travelers sitting close by.
As the flight got delayed further, one of my new friends was bemoaning the fact that she will miss her connecting flight to Toronto. As we chatted further, she mentioned that she was going to Toronto to her nephew’s funeral the next day. He had committed sucide at age 18. My other new friend, then mentioned that he too lost a 23 year old nephew 6 months ago from a drug overdose. The guilt, pain and heartbreak are unbearable for the parents and families of those 2 kids.
We walk with our heads held high, smiles on our faces and laughter in our voices masking struggles. It reminded me of a quote by Wendy Mass (a spin on a Plato quote):
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
Be kind this week
Show your loved ones some affection
Grant yourself some grace as well
