Travel SnapShots: Sleeping Bear Dunes
Last weekend we flew to Michigan and then road tripped it with 23 others to the northern coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. I had no expectations. I just tagged along on a family trip for the laughs and fellowship.
Our first stop was the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. My jaw dropped as we pulled into the main parking area. Rising above us where tall sand dunes. I had done zero research so I was amazed. Who knew all this existed in the US.
Seeing the numerous visitors [it was after all a holiday weekend – the unofficial start of summer] climb the first dune brought to mind a pilgrimage of sorts.
We also drove the scenic loop to see where the Dunes met Lake Michigan. Amazing!
My pictures do not do justice to the cliff like structure (bluff) the sand makes around Lake Michigan 450 feet below! People ventured down the bluff to the beach area despite warning signs that it is a strenuous trek back up which takes hours.
The thing about not having any expectations, you relax, enjoy the ride and are amazed.
If you ever in northern Michigan, the dunes are a must see.
