Inspiration vs. Action
“Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.”
― Chuck Close
I read the quote above today on Instagram and it resonated with me in all aspects of life. I wait around for inspiration to do things I in my heart I know I should try or wait for someone to “discover” me and point me in the right career or next job.
True discovery comes from trying things, moving on from the failed attempts and trying again. Showing up everyday to write even though no one will ever see the notes in your journal. Exploring new things to find your groove and your sweet spot. Always growing and reinventing oneself.
May you take a step towards your more inspired self. Remember you don’t need the latest gear or a tribe to begin. An iPhone is enough to take pictures or start a youtube channel or a blog, or to produce a podcast or to write a speech, or network or even begin dating.
