Exploring the Caribbean via Cruise: Puerto Rico

I am Caribbean born and bred and love the diversity of the islands. Each island is flavored by its geography (volcanos & mountains for instance), its people and its colonial past or current.

We took a 12-day Southern Caribbean cruise to kick off 2017 on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Sea. It was my first ever cruise and I now understand why people love love cruises. I am now a believer. If you ever get a chance to take a trip on one of these state of the art cruise ships, take it. You will not be disappointed.

The itinerary took us to Puerto Rico, Saint Maarten, Antigua, Martinique, Barbados and St. Kitts. We arrived in San Juan late afternoon and we took an “evening drive” excursion around new and old San Juan. Below are a few pictures from that drive.

A tip for those traveling with kids, chose excursions that stop frequently to allow kids to stretch their legs and wander, otherwise they will get bored with only driving around or chose age appropriate activities such as zip lining, kayaking, sailing etc which keeps them engaged. It was just me and my 5 year old (who is weary of adventurous activities) and she slept most of the time we were in a vehicle. The history and sites were not that compelling from the window of a vehicle to a kid.

Tomorrow I will share highlights from Saint Maarten.
